Keep Your Horse Life Productive and Fun – No Matter the Forecast

We all know the feeling: the skies open up, the paddocks turn to mud, and your riding plans go out the window. But just because the weather isn’t playing ball doesn’t mean your passion for horses needs to go on hold. Here’s a bumper list of ideas for what you can do on those rainy, windy or downright miserable days – keeping your equestrian life ticking along, your gear in top nick, and your mind and body sharp for when you’re back in the saddle.

Keep Your Body and Mind Equestrian-Ready – Indoors!

  1. Hit the gym or Pilates to work on your core, flexibility and overall strength.

  2. Test for compensatory patterns: Check how your body moves—think toes, ankles, hips, squats, rotations, shoulders, elbows, arms.

  3. Practice rein and seat work off the horse using a chair or exercise ball to keep those aids sharp or notice imbalances to improve.

  4. Gym ball work with bands or balance work on the edge of a step to boost stability (think standing on the step with the ball of your foot practicing 2-point position or super slow squats).

  5. Stretching and mindful positioning: Visualise yourself riding well—muscle memory counts!

  6. Memorise and visualise dressage, showing, cross-country, or jumping courses or tests to stay competition ready.

  7. Practice knot tying skills—handy for horsey life and easy to do while bingeing your favourite show. Want some equine-safe knots, check out more here.

Get Organised: Horse, Gear & Home

  1. Sort out your feed bins and give the hard feed area a good scrub.

  2. Clean rugs, prep them for changing seasons, and set aside any that need repairs.

  3. Review your horse’s feed to see if any tweaks are needed for the current work level or season.

  4. Check when vaccinations, dentals, and the farrier are due—schedule ahead so nothing’s missed.

  5. Review your equine first aid kit and book into an equine first aid course for peace of mind.

  6. Check your float or car: Clean inside, check when services are due, fill up with petrol, and inspect tyres and lights.

  7. Review all your riding gear and apparel: chuck, donate, or sell what you don’t use.

  8. Review your competition gear: clean, replace, or sell—prep now, stress less later!

  9. Tidy bins and rubbish around the stables/horse gear to keep things safe and neat.

  10. Review your fire plan—staying safe is always in season.

  11. Clean your tack—saddles, bridles, boots, you name it. Rainy arvo? Perfect tack cleaning time. Or book it in for a professional to take care of this for you:

Learn, Plan & Connect

  1. Look for local clinics or Adult Riding Club days and book in—you’ll be glad you did once the sun’s out (maybe even spectate).

  2. Look up something new—whether it’s a riding technique, equine care tip, or horsey trivia (there are also plenty of blogs to read here).

  3. Review your float, car or horse insurance—shop around and see if you can nab a better deal.

  4. Book a call with a finance expert (need a recommendation?) for a quick review of your horsey budget - it's free!

  5. Check your favourite horse websites for sales and see what your fav coaches or instructors are up to via socials or podcasts.

  6. Read equine-specific blogs, dive into podcasts, or review horse pictures online to train your eye for posture and function (plenty of blogs to read here).

  7. Write a list of questions, to help reflect on your lessons, for your coach so you’re ready for your next lesson.

  8. Review your saddle fit by measuring up here (you can do this without a horse).

  9. Book in a catch up with a horsey mate—coffee, a call, or lunch makes a rainy day fly by (and did you know it takes 8 minutes to make someone feel cared for by talking/listening to them).

Get Handy and Creative

  1. Go to Bunnings and find storage or stable hacks to make life easier.

    1. Make sure you enjoy a good old sausage sizzle whilst you are there!

  2. Desensitisation training: If it’s just windy (not raining), it’s a prime day for some safe groundwork, get out some noisy bags, dancing pool noodles, clippers, spray bottles, umbrellas - you name it, you can work with your horse on this.

  3. Ask yourself: do you need more baby wipes in the car? Trust us, you probably do!

Still Got More Time?

  1. Clean the inside of your horse car and float—a job no one loves but always appreciates after.

  2. Fill up your car with petrol so you’re ready to roll when the weather clears.

Wind, rain, hail or shine, there’s always something for an equestrian to get stuck into. So, next time the heavens open, pull out this list and keep moving forward with your horsey goals – no gumboots required!
