How to Spot Hidden Tension, Why It Blocks Forward Energy, and Simple Tips to Create Awareness and Flow
Ever wonder why your horse feels sluggish or resistant, even when you’re asking for forward? The culprit might not be your horse—it could be you bracing through your legs. This subtle tension can block your horse’s movement and create confusion in your aids. Let’s break down how to spot it and what to do about it.
Why Leg Bracing Stops Forward Movement
When you brace through your thighs, knees, or calves, you create:
Physical Block: Your muscles tighten, gripping the horse’s barrel and restricting its ribcage and back.
Mixed Signals: A braced leg often feels like a “stop” cue, even if you’re squeezing for “go.”
Loss of Flow: Bracing locks your hips and core, preventing you from following the horse’s motion.
Signs You Might Be Bracing
✅ Your horse slows down or “sucks back” when you apply leg aids.
✅ You feel stiff in your thighs or knees, especially at trot or canter.
✅ Your heels jam down aggressively instead of resting softly.
✅ You notice tension in your hips or lower back after riding.
Tips to Create Awareness and Release
Check Your Breath: Holding your breath often equals holding tension. Practice breathing out as you apply leg aids.
Ride Without Stirrups: This helps you feel if your legs are gripping for security. Aim for soft, draped legs.
Visualize “Wrapping” Instead of “Pressing”: Think of your legs hugging the horse like a warm towel—not clamping like a vice.
Do the Swing Test: At halt, let your legs swing freely from the hip. If they feel locked, you’re bracing.
Stretch Before You Ride: Hip openers and hamstring stretches reduce the urge to grip for stability.
Light Seat Exercises: Practice transitions between light seat and full seat to learn how to engage without tension.

Bonus Awareness Drill
At walk, lift your knees slightly away from the saddle for a few strides, then relax them back down. Notice the difference in feel—soft legs allow better horse movement.
Bottom Line
Bracing is often unconscious, but awareness changes everything. A relaxed, elastic leg invites forward energy and harmony. Next time your horse feels stuck, check your own body first—you might be the key to unlocking that forward flow.
