Reflections from the Mark Langley 6-Day Intensive: A Journey of Connection and Confidence

I’ve just returned from an unforgettable 6-day intensive clinic with Mark Langley (Mark Langely Horsmanship), and I’m still buzzing from the experience. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Skylark (Rosewhite, Victoria Australia), Mark and Jenny’s newly established property, this clinic was more than just a training—it was a deep dive into the art of true horsemanship.

From the moment we (myself and my 2 horses) arrived, it was clear this wasn’t your average clinic. With only six horses and riders, the experience was intimate and deeply personalised. Each horse brought something unique to the arena—from a curiously impulsive two-year-old to a seasoned, heavy-bred horse with years of experience under her girth. The diversity in age, breed, and temperament made for a rich learning environment, and Mark met each horse (and owner) exactly where they were. Mark is so kind-heartedly genuine, and embraces fair dinkum Aussie spirited stories throughout. Wicked entertainment!

6-Day Intensive Clinic Format

ree

Mark's 6-day clinics take the following format:

  • Day 1-3: Mark works with your horse after discussing your opportunities and un-pack the root cause of their fundamental needs to positively re-wire the new, improved training pathways.

  • Day 4: Rest day for horses and humans.

    • I chose to explore Bright, Victoria (even though I have been every year to Bright, I love walking and exploring this area), which is under a 30 minute serene drive away. Watch this space for a future blog post on recommendations on what to do in this area on your day off.

  • Day 5-7: Mark transitions the training sessions to the owner. The owner executes the ridden and/or in-hand training to ensure understanding and refinement of exercises and skills is understood and the why!

Un-Packing the Training Days

For the first three days, Mark worked one-on-one with each horse in sessions that ranged from 1 hour 15 minutes to nearly 2 hours. These weren’t cookie-cutter lessons—they were tailored, thoughtful, and deeply intuitive. Watching him work was like witnessing a conversation unfold between horse and human, one where the horse always had a voice. You learnt from every single horse in this clinic, and was a truly submersive experience. And you really get to know and support the other owners on their journey too. So I encourage everyone to stick around (watch every lesson and not just your own) and get your brains humming with lots of licking and chewing on things you may or may not know!

Day four was a well-earned rest day for both horses and humans. It gave us time to reflect, absorb, and prepare for the next phase—where we, the owners, stepped into the arena.

Over the final three days, Mark gradually handed the reins back to us, guiding us to continue the work he had started. This transition was empowering. Instead of leaving with a list of instructions, we left with understanding, confidence, and a renewed connection with our horses. Mark doesn’t just train horses—he empowers people.

Skylark: The Property with a Picture-Perfect View

And then there’s Skylark, the property. Wow, just wow! Mark and Jenny, along with their beautiful kids, horses, and a few adorable puppies, had only just moved in under a month ago. Yet the facilities were already incredible. Set on 100 acres, the newly built house and equestrian setup were both functional and beautiful.

  • Three cozy rooms with a kitchen, bathroom, and separate toilet made for a comfortable stay (you can book these when you book your spot in the Skylark clinics).

  • The 32m x 32m indoor arena was a dream to work in, and the viewing areas offered stunning vistas of the horse yards and paddocks.

  • Camping is also an option with plenty of space and shade.

But what truly set Skylark apart was its serenity. Whether it was the golden glow of sunrise or the peaceful hush of sunset, the property radiated calm. It’s a place where horses and humans alike can recharge, breathe, learn, and grow.

Mark and Jenny’s warmth and generosity were the heart of the experience. Always ready to lend a hand or share a story, they’ve created more than just a training facility—they’ve built a sanctuary that backs on to State Forest and trails for kilometers!

Fellow Horsie Peeps

I have been a student of Mark for quite a few years now, however, this was the first 6-day intensive I've attended (his clinics are so popular they fill like hot cakes!). The number of like-minded horsie people at Mark's clinics truly are a testament to how horse ownership and partnership should be. I've made so many wonderful connections and friendships here! Honoured to be a part of it.

To the beautiful ladies, and horse owners, that I shared this experience with—Andrea (with Banjo), Anne (with Willow), Louise (with Bella), Megan (with Sadie) and Myrle (with Jack)—it was an absolute pleasure to get to know you and your fur babies and walk away with continuing horsie friends and journeys... I won't mention some of the outrageously funny phrases, songs, jokes and moments we had to encourage and support one another, but the memories will be cherished forever! You guys are definitely part of the "horsie tribe"!

Here is a selection of the music that made some appearances throughout this 6-day clinic:

If you’re looking to deepen your connection with your horse, to truly understand and be understood, I can’t recommend this clinic or Mark's training enough. It’s not just about riding—it’s about relationships, partnerships, respect, and the quiet power of trust.

Is anyone wanting to know more or have any questions about these types of clinics, please do drop them below! I'd be more than happy to answer them.
