Why You Should Check Your Gelding’s Sheath in Hot Weather

When temperatures soar above 30°C, your horse’s body works overtime to stay cool. But did you know that heat can also affect your gelding’s sheath? Today, I noticed swelling in a few horses—and upon inspection, found extra smegma deposits and beans that needed flushing with cool water. Here’s why this happens and why it’s important not to ignore it.

Why Does Heat Cause Swelling?

  • Increased circulation: Hot weather causes blood vessels to dilate, which can lead to mild swelling in sensitive areas like the sheath.

  • Sweat and dirt buildup: Horses sweat more in summer, and combined with dust, this can increase smegma production.

  • Restricted airflow: The sheath area doesn’t get much ventilation, making it prone to irritation and bacterial growth.

Why Regular Checks Matter

Ignoring swelling can lead to:

  • Discomfort and pain: Beans (hardened smegma deposits) can cause pressure and soreness.

  • Infections: Excess buildup creates a breeding ground for bacteria.

  • Behavioural issues: Horses may become irritable or resistant under saddle.

What Should You Do?

  • Inspect regularly: Especially during heatwaves.

  • Flush gently: Use cool water (I use a stand-alone hand pumped hose and have trained my geldings to be accepting of handling this area) and avoid harsh soaps.

  • Call your vet: If swelling persists or your horse shows signs of pain.

Final Thoughts

Sheath care isn’t glamorous, but it’s essential for your gelding’s comfort and health—especially in hot weather. A quick check can prevent serious issues and keep your horse happy all summer long.
