Why Does Bracing Happen?
If your horse feels stiff or resistant on one side of their body, it’s often due to asymmetry in flexibility, strength, or balance. This can show up as difficulty bending, falling in or out on circles, or resisting lateral aids. The goal isn’t to force softness—it’s to encourage equal bend and relaxation.
✅ In-Hand Exercises
Lateral Flexion at the Poll and Neck: Stand at the girth and gently ask for bend toward the softer side first, then the stiffer side. Reward small releases to avoid tension.
Shoulder Yield or Shoulder-in on a Small Circle: Walk the horse in a small circle and ask the shoulders to step out slightly. This frees the rib cage and engages the inside hind.
Rib Cage Mobilisation: Use a light touch with your hand or whip on the rib area to ask for a lateral shift. Combine with forward steps for relaxation.
Serpentines and Figure-Eights: Lead through curves, encouraging equal bend both directions. Keep transitions smooth and reward softness.

Leg-Yield from the Quarter Line: Start toward the softer side, then the stiffer side. Focus on rhythm and relaxation, not speed.
Spiral In and Out on a Circle: Gradually decrease and increase the circle size. Helps the horse stretch and engage both sides evenly.
Shoulder-In and Shoulder-Fore: On the stiffer side, ask for slight shoulder-in to free the rib cage. Keep the neck straight and avoid over-bending.
Transitions Within Lateral Work: Walk → trot → walk while maintaining lateral positioning. Builds strength and suppleness without rushing.
