Effective Tips for Treating and Preventing Parasites in Pet Rabbits

Fleas and mites are common parasites that can affect rabbits, causing itching, hair loss, scabs, and general discomfort. If you notice your rabbit scratching more than usual, see flaky skin or bald patches, or spot tiny bugs moving through their fur, it's time to take action.

Immediate Steps to Take

  1. Apply Revolution Kitten: The first line of defence is to apply Revolution Kitten (selamectin) to your rabbit’s skin between the shoulder blades every month (peel back the fur to apply). This product, while labelled for kittens, is widely recommended by Australian vets for rabbits and is safe when used at the correct dosage.

  2. Use a Rabbit-Safe Mite Spray: Complement the monthly treatment with a rabbit mite spray, ensuring it's specifically formulated for rabbits. Never use sprays meant for dogs or cats unless approved by your vet, as some ingredients can be toxic to bunnies.

  3. Clean the Environment: Wash your rabbit’s bedding, toys, and any fabric surfaces in hot water. Vacuum the area thoroughly, including carpets, skirting boards, and under furniture, to remove eggs and larvae. Use the spray from 2. above to spray their environment to help kill any unseen mites/creepy crawlies. Wait for it to dry before putting your rabbit back into their space.

Additional Tips for Managing Fleas and Mites

  • Quarantine Affected Rabbits: If you have more than one rabbit, separate the affected one to prevent the spread of parasites.

  • Multiple Rabbits: Apply the Revolution Kitten to all other rabbits in your household. It is the best way to prevent and reduce the infestation.

  • Check Other Pets: Dogs and cats can also carry fleas and mites. Treat them accordingly and keep them away from the rabbit’s area until all pets are parasite-free.

  • Monitor and Repeat: Continue monitoring your rabbit for signs of improvement. It may take a few weeks for all signs of infestation to disappear. Repeat treatments as directed by your vet.

  • Consult Your Vet: Always consult your vet before starting any new treatment. If your rabbit’s condition worsens or fails to improve, there may be an underlying issue requiring professional attention.

  • Maintain Hygiene: Regularly clean your rabbit’s enclosure and keep outdoor play areas free of moisture and debris where fleas and mites might thrive.

Prevention Is Key

Prevention is always better than cure. By applying Revolution Kitten monthly, keeping your rabbit's environment clean, and regularly checking for signs of fleas and mites, you can help keep your bunny happy and healthy. Remember, prompt action and ongoing care are crucial for parasite management. If in doubt, reach out to your local vet—they’re always the best source of advice for your furry mate.
