Why Heat Management Matters

When the mercury climbs above 30°C, horses are at risk of heat stress, dehydration, and discomfort. As responsible owners, we need to take proactive steps to keep them cool and happy. Here are practical, horse-friendly strategies you can start using today.

1. Hose Them Down (But Skip the Scraper!)

A cool rinse is one of the fastest ways to lower your horse’s body temperature.

Tip: Don’t scrape off the water—letting it evaporate helps cool the skin naturally. Repeat as needed throughout the day. Let your horse enjoy a post-hose roll in dust/mud to add an extra layer of cooling to their coats and skin.

2. Bobbing Apples in the Water Trough

Turn hydration into a game! Toss a few halved apples into the trough and watch your horse bob for them.

Why It Works: Encourages drinking and adds a fun enrichment activity during hot, lazy afternoons. Also replenishes their glucose levels. (NB: Don't do this with sugar-affected horses.)

3. Offer Icy Treats

Freeze apples, carrots, or even a small bucket of water with treats inside.

Bonus: It’s a refreshing snack and helps keep hydration levels up.

4. Apply Fly Spray to Legs and Face

Heat often brings flies. Protect sensitive areas like legs and face with a safe, horse-friendly fly spray.

Extra Comfort: Reduces irritation so your horse can relax instead of stomping and swishing.

5. Mesh or Flag Rugs for Cooling

Lightweight mesh or flag rugs can help keep flies off while allowing airflow.

Tip: Avoid heavy rugs—they trap heat. Choose breathable fabrics designed for summer conditions.

6. Add Extra Salt and Electrolytes in Feed

Horses sweat more in the heat. Double their salt in their feed and add electrolytes also.

Tip: Always have electrolyte powder on hand throughout the year as this can be used when they have heavier exercise days too.

Other Quick Tips

  • Provide shade—trees, shelters, or shade cloths work wonders.

  • Ensure fresh, cool water is always available.

  • Ride early morning or late evening to avoid peak heat.

  • Add electrolytes and salt to feed during prolonged hot spells.
