Preparation is Key
Horse riding isn’t just about what happens in the saddle—it starts with how you prepare. The right outfit can make the difference between a comfortable, confident ride and one filled with distractions.
Here’s the order I follow (and a few tips to make your gear work harder for you):
1. Underpants
Start with a seamless, breathable pair. Avoid bulky seams—they can cause rubbing during long rides.
2. Sports Bra
Choose one with high support and moisture-wicking fabric. Comfort here = focus in the saddle. Also reduces medical complications later in life with tissue degradation from lack of support. Plus, no-one wants to be distracted from your headlights trying to knock you out every stride during your ride. Not cool!
Here is a review blog on sports bras to help you find awesome ones for your puppies!
3. Riding Top
Opt for a lightweight, SPF comfortable top that moves with you. Technical fabrics keep you cool and dry. I love quarter zip tops that are not so form-fitting for comfort reasons, as I am not a fan of showing of my bulging bits. Tip: Opt for SPF sun tops to help keep you protected from the Aussie sun! Your future you will thank you.
4. Deodorant & Perfume
Apply after putting your top on! I do this so you don't getting any streaking on your clothes from deodorants. It also helps getting some nice smells on your clothes as they can help make you smell fresher for longer.
5. Breeches, Tights, or Jodhpurs
Pick a pair with good stretch and a secure waistband. Silicone grip can help with stability but make sure it’s not too sticky for your discipline.

6. Socks Over Breeches/Tights/Leggings/Jodhpurs
Pull your (tall/long/knee high) socks over your tights/leggings/breeches/jodhpurs to prevent bunching inside your boots.
Bonus: it keeps everything sleek and comfortable. Less rubbing too!
7. Hair & Finishing Touches
Secure your hair in a low bun or braid to fit under your helmet. Heaps of fly-aways, a quick dusting with hairspray can help here! A quick swipe of tinted moisturizer or SPF keeps you looking fresh and protected. For lessons or clinics, I put on a quick application of mascara to help freshen my eyes. (Very optional as it is not for everyone!)
8. Outerwear
Check the weather and layer up with a jacket or vest that allows freedom of movement. Avoid anything too bulky—it can interfere with your reins and seat. There are a bunch of equestrian-specific riding jackets out there that can be ideal for this!
9. Helmet, Boots & Gloves
Always opt-in for safety!
Better safe than sorry!
Ensure you have an Equestrian Australia approved riding helmet. Boots over socks helps keep the bulk under the saddle looking finished and classy. Gloves are a great way to protect your hands and fingers whilst also assist with grip on the reins.
Comfort Hacks to Remember
Moisture-wicking everything: Sweat happens—choose fabrics that breathe.
Stretch is your friend: Restrictive clothing = restricted riding.
Plan for the weather: Layers are key for unpredictable conditions.
