My Favourite Hacks for an Easier Horsey Life (Just in Time for Christmas Break!)

As we edge closer to the Christmas break and start looking forward to a brand new year, I thought I’d share some of my tried-and-true horse tips and tricks that make life in the paddock (and at events) so much easier. Whether you’re wrangling hay bales, organising your ute tray, or just after a smoother feed-up, these handy hacks will save you time, mess, and a fair bit of hassle. Give them a go—and feel free to share with your horsey mates!

1. Feed Prep Made Easy

Mixing up dry and wet feeds can be a messy job, but using a trowel takes the hard work out of it. No more sticky hands or clumps left behind! I swear by my Fiskars trowel (thanks, Pip, for the hot tip!).

2. Move Big Loads Without Fancy Machinery

Shifting gear, hay, or feed when you don’t have access to fancy equipment? A sturdy garden dump cart is your best mate. I use the larger 200L Gorilla Cart model and it’s a real back-saver.

3. Hay Feeders That Do the Job

If you need to keep hay off the ground and dry, while accommodating both square and round bales, check out feeders with built-in drainage and slow-feeder hay nets. I can source one for you and even help put it together if you like!

4. Ute Tray & Car Boot Organisation

Keep your ute tray (or car boot) in order with storage trays on wheels. They’re perfect for stashing hay bales or horse products, preventing spills and keeping things from rolling about. My top pick: the All Set range (available in different sizes).

5. Level Up Your Horsemanship

Want to polish your horse’s ground manners? A good flag makes all the difference. I’m a big fan of the ones from Kaz’s Flags & Tail Bags—durable and easy to use.

6. The Hay Bale Bag Must-Have

Heading off for a day out or to clinics or comps? A quality square hay bale bag is a game-changer for keeping hay clean and contained. I use Super Horse bags—and trust me, having a couple on hand is well worth it.

7. Feed Storage that Lasts

For rodent-proof and long-lasting feed storage, you can’t beat Millennium Feed Bins. They’re tough, mobile, and will last you for yonks—keeping all your hard feeds and supplements safe and sound. I've had mine for over 6 years now!

8. Quick & Easy Pony Washes

Washing your horse can be a chore, but a good shampoo hose fitting (like the Hoselink Soap Sprayer or the Hoselink Fertiliser Sprayer - ensure you double check if you need any adapters for your hose) will speed things up and make bath time a breeze. Your pony will thank you—and so will your arms and back!

Any Questions or Tips to Share?

Got a burning question or your own horsey hack? Pop it in the comments below—I’m always keen to chat and can share more tips if you need. There are plenty more where these came from, but these should set you up for a stress-free summer with your four-legged mates.

Happy riding—and feel free to pass these tips along to your horsey friends!
